A new build integrated nursery and primary extension to create an 'All through' Academy for Bradford. The Academy is currently at the leading edge of school design and an important project based on a Scandanavian model of delivering education and is one of only a handful in the country.
The transformational design reflects and enhances the Academies ethos and specialism of Citizenship and Enterprise, promoting 'All Through' philosophy and embraces natural daylight, modern methods of construction and sustainable technology.
The building is designed to create a simple legible and cohesive plan form which is symbiotic with the existing academy and establishes a seamless connection physically, educationally and spiritually.

Bardsley wins Two Green Awards
at the Northwest Business Environment Awards 2010

Winner (over £1m)
The Hive (Stevenson Square)
5 Plus Architects (formerly HKR Architects) Bardsley and partners
At The Hive, the air is regulated naturally; each floor cools itself overnight thanks to a combination of simple but elegant building materials and their thermal properties.
These absorb any build-up of heat during the day and gently let it out again at night via secure motorised louvres. This process is called 'night purge' and means your office remains comfortably and naturally cool.

Runner-up (over £1m)
Loreto Sixth Form College - Phase 4
Waterman Group with AA Projects Ltd, Taylor Young Architects and Bardsley Construction Ltd
The design uses heavy thermal massing which retains heat in the building's mass, floors, and ceilings. The installation of a large 30,000 litre water tank allows for rainwater to be harvested and then re-used to flush toilets and water the plants on site. A series of photovoltaic panels have been put on the roof to produce electricity directly from sunlight. The deep bore ground source heat pump uses warmth from the ground to heat the building. The roof features a sedum roof, which has many environmental properties such as absorbing rainwater, providing insulation, providing habitats for small animals and insects.

Bardsley team swim Channel for Help for Heroes
Monday 13th September is a day to remember for four water babies. Nathan Royle from BDB, Ian Shaw from M-Tec together with Ted MacDougal and Dave McEwan from Bardsley swam the English Channel in relay to raise money for Help for Heroes, a charity which supports injured members of the armed forces.
The boys took to the sea wearing the official attire of speedos and googles. Just enough to cover their modesty and a little more than the official photograph which was deemed a little to risque for the French. (Who would have thought?)
The 21 mile swim from Dover to Cap Gris Nez, Calais took the quartet 13 hours and 57 minutes, arriving in Calais at 15:33pm looking wrinkly and relieved they didn't have to dodge to many ferries.

Bardsley Golf Challenge 2010.
The Bardsley Golf Challenge is a charitable event helping us to raise funds for the Bardsley Trust and the Community Foundation for Greater Manchester.
A balmy day in June 2010 saw the competition return to Ashton-under-Lyne Golf Club for the first time since 2008. An exceptional turn out of clients, contractors and associates produced one of the closest scorecards ever seen in this competition. Nick Walsh (Club Captain) finished the round complaining about being 3 over. One over the clubhouse, one over the road and one over the carpark. Good job Brian Hoyle was there to save the day.

Bardsley staff flock to protect birds nest.
A Blackbirds nest was discovered by Bardsley employees during the construction of a new Facility Management building for Edge Hill University at Ormskirk.
Dr. Des Callaghan, Consultant Ecologist at Eco Study (www.ecostudy.co.uk) said "Your support is much appreciated and I look forward to hearing when the birds have all safely fledged."
The nest was located within a hole in the rear wall of the building at about 2m height, near to the SE corner of the building. The hole has been created for a flu to be fitted, leading from a boiler in the plant room to the exterior. The Blackbird nest is in good condition and contains five eggs, which are being incubated presently by the parent. The Blackbird female was active around the nest and seemed accustomed to the construction activity occuring in the local vicinity.
Site-worker awareness
Dr Callaghan spoke to three workers working within the plant room behind the nest and three other workers working on the exterior of the building close to the nest. All were aware of the location of the nest and were keeping an eye on the female bird. The workers had an interest in the well-being and the nest and eggs. Dr Callaghan also made the following recommendations, which have been implemented in full by all concerned.
- No works that may damage or destroy the nest and eggs should be undertaken. Works on fitting the flu should proceed only once the nest becomes inactive. This will be within 2 to 4 weeks if the female hatches the eggs and rears the young, or earlier if she abandons the nest.
- A temporary notice that explains the location of the nest and its legal protection should be fixed to the exterior wall of the building near to the nest.
- The nest should be re-inspected at weekly intervals so that I may report on its condition and the point at which it becomes inactive and can be removed.
Legal protection
The nests and eggs of all wild birds are protected by law and no works should be undertaken that may damage or destroy the nest or eggs. Works may proceed on fitting the flu once the young have fledged and the nest becomes inactive. Licenses can be obtained through Natural England to remove nests that are in use, but only if they are a threat to health and safety.

Bardsley Constructs Growth with Yorkshire Office.
Bardsley Construction's expansion represents a significant development for the business which has operated solely from its Manchester head office for 45 years. The £70m turnover business believes that recent contract wins and wider economic trends signal a return to modest growth in the construction sector. The office at 2 Wellington Place in Leeds is a strategic investment following a number of contract wins with the University of Bradford and the Yorbuild Framework. The office will be headed by Bardsley Construction's Yorkshire regional manager Adrian Rooney. Mr Rooney's role will be to grow business activities across the Yorkshire region. Mr Rooney said: "We're definitely seeing tentative signs of recovery in the construction market after two very tough years in the longest and deepest downturn since the 1930s. "This is our first regional office and having a cross-Pennines presence gives us a fantastic opportunity to work with new clients and enhance the Bardsley name and reputation outside its traditional North West heartland." Bardsley has been appointed as one of the preferred contractors for the University of Bradford's four year works construction framework. The £3m of works will involve a mix of refurbishment and new build. On the Yorbuild construction framework the business will undertake new build, refurbishment and design and build works for local authorities and public sector bodies such as Leeds, Kirklees, Calderdale and Bradford councils. Wayne Bardsley, chairman of Bardsley Construction, said: "We're delighted to be opening an office in Yorkshire and look forward to bringing our hard-earned reputation for work with new clients across the Pennines."

The Hive, Manchester. A landmark 'Green' building is handed over.
Argent Group PLC and Manchester City Council have announced the practical completion of their joint venture development, The Hive, located in the heart of Manchester's Northern Quarter. The landmark building provides 78,000sqft of cutting edge office space, and is a new hub for business in this unique part of the city.
Argent created The Hive to tap into the inspirational spirit of the Northern Quarter, helping to continue the ongoing regeneration, and setting a new standard for future developments in the area.
Designed by the Manchester office of international architecture and design practice, HKR Architects, the stunning design has raised the bar for sustainable innovation by using the latest in green technology, an important component of modern business. The building has received a BREEAM 'Excellent' rating for its use of green planting on the rooftops, natural ventilation and energy efficient lighting system.
The building has received a grade 'B' energy performance rating and with only one building in the UK having received an 'A' rating, this is further evidence of The Hive's significant range of green credentials.
Oliver Butler, project manager at Argent Group PLC has worked closely with the project since its inception in 2007. "Seeing the finished product marks an incredible journey for all those involved in the delivery of this fantastic development. The vision was to create a landmark building for the Northern Quarter, and to help enhance the community with a great new facility. We are confident that The Hive will continue to attract a diverse range of businesses and generate further investment into this part of the city."
Built by Bardsley, the building represents the company's ethos of employing a team of directly employed, committed and talented people, all of whom have raised the bar in terms of their professional approach to overcoming many difficulties associated with construction in the heart of a busy city centre.
Wayne Bardsley, chairman of Bardsley said: "We were obviously delighted to create such an innovative and striking building that epitomises the ongoing transformation of Manchester as a city and the Northern Quarter in particular.
"The Hive is a vision of the future of construction and the significantly reduced environmental impact it has on the city is something to aspire to with all future building projects."

Pupils at Alder Grange Perform Sod Cutting Ceremony on New £8 Million Sixth Form College.
Construction work on a new state-of-the-art £8m Sixth Form at Alder Grange Community and Technology School in Rawtenstall, Lancashire has begun.
The start of the project has been marked with a special sod-cutting ceremony which involved pupils, staff and the construction team.
The state-of-the-art facility will cater for 300 students and will include: science laboratories; a media studio and performance space; an industry standard catering kitchen; nursery and creche facilities for child development students, plus ICT and library facilities.
Work has been held up by the cold snap at the start of 2010 but now work on site is well underway. The build is expected to last for 12 months. The school's first Sixth Form intake will be housed in temporary accommodation until the construction process is complete.
Alder Grange head of school David Hampson said: "Over the past few years there have been lots of meetings and plans where the Sixth Form was just a dream — now it is becoming a reality and it is very exciting for everyone involved.
"We already have a number of students who have applied to go to the Sixth Form — they are particularly delighted to see work getting under way.
"The Sixth Form will add something completely different for post 16 students in Rossendale and is one of the most positive education developments in the area for many years.
"The school will offer a specifically developed curriculum, which will meet needs of students — one that is not offered elsewhere in the valley. This will mean fewer students having to travel out of the valley to colleges in Bury, Burnley and Accrington."

The local residents were pleasantly surprised by the professionalism of Bardsley, a commitment ingrained throughout our dedicated workforce.
Mrs Jean Davis said "Builders can be a nightmare, but the workers on 'our' site have been stupendous! From putting out the bins, clearing my car of snow and even offering to shop for us when my 80 year old mother was ill, they have been polite, helpful, considerate, neat, quiet, hardworking, organised... I could carry on and on.
"No praise is too high and I recommend this company and its employees very highly. The experience of living next to a building site has been a very pleasant surprise indeed!"
All those involved with the creation of the tree lined refurbished streets in the area have been considerate and friendly - including the patient relocation of lighting when residents required it.
